How to host your first business event
Hosting is one of the quickest ways to become known to the right people in your industry. A first event can be small. Here is how to run one well.

The short answer
Pick a narrow subject your industry cares about, choose a small format such as a roundtable or workshop, and set a date a few weeks away. Write a listing that says exactly what the event is and who it is for, invite the people who would care, then run a simple check-in, start with introductions, keep to time, and follow up with everyone who came.
Choose a narrow subject
"Networking for business owners" is easy to ignore. "Pricing your services when costs keep rising" or "Hiring your first employee" tells the right people this is for them. A narrow subject also gives you an easy way to open the evening.
Pick a format and a size
- Roundtable. Eight to fifteen people around one question, with you keeping the conversation moving. The easiest first event.
- Workshop. You or a guest teaches something practical. Needs more preparation and suits ticketing.
- Dinner. A small group, a good table, a loose theme. Strong for relationships, harder to fill with strangers.
- Networking evening. Larger and looser. Give it a theme and a few structured introductions or it becomes a bar.
Venue and price
Choose a venue that fits the size; a half-empty large room feels worse than a full small one. Co-working spaces, a member's own office and private rooms in cafés are all common. Decide early whether the event is free or ticketed. A modest ticket price tends to reduce no-shows and can cover the venue.
On GrowthSync, any member can host one event a month on the free plan. If you charge, you connect your own Stripe account, set ticket tiers, and GrowthSync keeps 10 percent of each paid ticket.
Write a listing people can say yes to
- A title that names the subject and the audience.
- Two or three sentences on what will happen and what people will leave with.
- Who it is for, and who it is not for.
- The date, time, place and price, and whether it is in person or online.
Events on GrowthSync are found by what they are about, through search across the title, description, category, city and venue, so a clear title and description matter more than an audience you already have.
Getting the first people in
Invite people directly: customers, suppliers, people you have met who would value the subject. Ask one or two to bring someone. Share the event in the communities for your industry. A small room of the right people is a success.
On the day
Check people in
On GrowthSync you scan tickets from your phone, and you can add someone else to scan; their access link stops working when the event ends.
Open with introductions
Everyone says their name, their business and what they are looking for in one sentence. It gives people a reason to talk to each other later.
Keep to time
Start when you said and finish when you said. People remember an event that respected their evening.
Make introductions
As host you know who needs whom. Introduce people; it is the part they will thank you for.
Afterwards
Thank everyone the next day and share anything you promised. On GrowthSync you can see who booked and who turned up, and attendees are asked to leave a review, which builds your record as a host for the next event. Ask two or three people what to change, and set the next date while it is fresh.
Common questions
How many people do I need for a first business event?
Fewer than you think. A roundtable of eight to fifteen of the right people is a good first event, and a full small room feels better than a half-empty large one.
Should my first event be free or paid?
Either works. A modest ticket price tends to reduce no-shows and can cover the venue; a free event is easier to fill with strangers. On GrowthSync you can do either on any plan.
Can I host on GrowthSync without paying?
Yes. Any signed-in member can host one event a month on the free plan. GrowthSync keeps 10 percent of paid tickets; free events cost nothing.
